Aftercare

  • hard feed must not be given for 2hrs post massage (hay is fine) as there is a risk that massage will divert blood flow away from the digestive system increasing the risk of colic

  • Ensure your horse has access to plenty of fresh water immediately after the massage. This helps flush out toxins released during the session

  • avoid riding immediately after massage as the horses muscles may be in a vulnerable condition.  I will advise on the type and amount of work in the days following massage - this is dependent on my findings on the day

  • if possible and practical , turn your horse out as soon as possible after massage, this will allow further time to relax and the muscles to gently settle into their new alignment.  If this is not possible walk your horse for 5-10 minutes  to improve circulation and help their muscles adjust

  • your horse may be quieter than usual or lie down following treatment.  This is a normal reaction and no cause for concern.

  • Watch for signs of stiffness, soreness, or any unusual behaviour, as mild tenderness is normal after a deep massage

  • ensure the horse is kept warm and dry.   If it’s cold, use a rug to keep their muscles warm and relaxed

  • For the next 24 hours, avoid strenuous exercise.  Gentle turnout or hacking is ideal for recovery.

  • aftercare advice and exercises/stretches may be offered to help aid and maintain suppleness and flexibility

  • regular massage treatments are advised every 6-8 weeks to maintain your horses performance and wellbeing by correcting any minor problems that may occur, before they develop into bigger issues
